Menomonee Falls Teen Court
The Menomonee Falls Teen Court was started in 1998 by Judge Michael Hurt. The program is designed to divert teens who are first time offenders from municipal court. It is a court for teens, run by teens and volunteers. First time offenders between 12 – 16 years of age are referred to the Court for such offenses as smoking, truancy, retail theft, curfew violations and damage to property. Teen offenders enter the court under the condition that they admit their guilt. Local attorneys volunteer their time to oversee the hearing process. After hearing the offender’s case, a teenage jury decides the most appropriate sentence based on the facts presented. This may include one or more of the following: writing an essay, jury duty, community service projects and/or apology letters.
This second chance enables the teenager to apply for a job or college with a clean record. To date, less than 10% of these teenagers have become repeat offenders. Teen court helps to give an outlet for the victim to voice their concerns, an experience to promote offender rehabilitation and a result which makes the community a better place for everyone.
